Understanding the importance of micro and macro space planning

This video explains retail space planning by introducing the concept of macro space planning and the importance of accurate store planning. It also talks through how StoreSpace® can help you manage the process.

Integrating micro and macro space is an important concept for most retailers. Because getting it right can have a profound effect on the profitability of a store.

What is the difference between micro and macro space planning?

Micro space planning is the process of putting the right product, range and assortment in front of your customers on the shelf. While macro space planning is the layout of the categories and delivery of the actual shelving within the store.

The two elements – micro and macro space – need to be planned in parallel. So that the retailer can understand how the bay, “run lengths” and fixtures can be laid out optimally in store. As well as delivering the the ideal assortment of products on shelf.

Planning your Macro Space

The key thing about macro space planning is really the word integrate. The macro space has to integrate both your target space plans and planogram sizes. It also needs to integrate with the physical building. This includes both the shape and nature of the building. As well as the fixtures and fittings which the products are sitting on.

Your macro space also needs to take account of shop fitting and standards manuals and possibly even with Asset and facilities management tools.

How can StoreSpace help the integration process?

It isn’t enough to simply overlay space on top of a fixture, as there are so many other elements involved. You need to fully integrate your macro space using a piece of software needs to help that process.

The online database typically holds all of the planning standards, AutoCAD colours and space hierarchy tailored to each retailer. This links closely with AutoCAD.
