Creating geo-referenced maps from scanned images of historic information

Our client has over 20 years’ experience in processing, managing and analysing data. Their customers include Government departments, national newspapers, telecommunication and retail.

Our Geographic Information System (GIS) expert was asked by our client on behalf of a Local Authority to create geo-referenced maps from scanned images of historical paper-based Ordnance Survey maps, some of which had no coordinates.

Geo-referencing is the process of associating images or data with a location so that it can be viewed and analysed in conjunction with other geographic data.

The client required the new digitised data format to eliminate the risks associated with keeping hard copy information and to give easy access to historical catalogues for those who require it.

CADS swiftly geo-referenced approximately 1300 images with associated location coordinates. It meant that the Local Authority not only had 24/7 access to highly accurate, digital map information

Highly accurate digital maps with georeferencing of 1300 images with location coordinates

CADS swiftly geo-referenced approximately 1300 images with associated location coordinates. It meant that the Local Authority not only had 24/7 access to highly accurate, digital map information but could also integrate their new geo-spatial data with other organisational databases, allowing for further data interrogation.

The transformation from paper to a digitised format gave the map data longevity, providing multiple practical uses now and in the future. The client commended the team’s swift and professional manner and advised that CADS’ Head Cartographer went above and beyond to help with any queries.
