Since 2008 Cadnet have worked closely with the University of Brighton Estates Department to overhaul their existing 2D property records into a coherent, standardised portfolio of BIM models. This BIM portfolio aims to future-proof the University's assets and increasing the value and usability of the data available to the Estates Department and their entire supply chain.
Cadnet's Approach Cadnet's BIM authoring services were applied in accordance with the University of Brighton's document and CAD standards specifications. Cadnet used the record drawings held by the University of Brighton in conjunction with survey data to ensure that the true 'as-built' nature of each building was recorded for the BIM portfolio. In doing this the Cadnet team were able to maintain the required standard of quality of output required by the University. So far, Cadnet have worked on the following buildings and projects for the University of Brighton BIM portfolio:
- Production of coordinated working drawings for the Cockroft Building, Bishopsbourne Building and Checklands House
- Conversion of 2D drawings to BIM format for Aldrich Library, Falmer Gym, Maryfield House, Mithras House and Pavillion Parade
Using Cadnet's Building Information Modelling (BIM) experience, the University of Brighton were able to:
- Tailor the construction of their BIM models to suit the needs of the University Estates Department.
- Quickly extract and schedule of key data from each BIM model for use in facilities maintenance, planning and grant calculation software.
- Eliminate the risks associated with double-handling of information and human error.
The University of Brighton recognised the benefits of BIM two years ago. We had the opportunity to update our estates records so we decided to make the leap from 2D to full 3D. The department contracted the services of Cadnet Limited to update and convert our existing records to BIM. They have provided an invaluable service delivering survey, modelling and BIM consultancy services. Having taken the step forward we have ensured that we will reap the benefits of the technology in the long term. We have linked the models to our FM system and we are building a comprehensive 'As-built' record of our entire estate. Our ultimate objective is to improve access to information, the management and maintenance of our facilities and better inform our supply chain partners on future refurbishment projects.
